so, this award goes to all the educators. i think we have a representative from the child care provider association here. and, so, this is for them. another thing i'm sure about is that i wouldn't be standing here without the inspiration and support of my husband and my daughter. my husband is always there behind me and my daughter is always therein expiring me. she's a teacher in the bayview and i'm so proud of her. and the last thing i'm sure about is that i follow a long, long line at holy family day home of literally hundreds of women. the sisters of the holy family. they're the only religious order founded in san francisco and they were founded to help children of families who -- where the father was panning for gold and the mom what alone in the city for many, many months. and they embraced the children then and we're still embracing them now. so, this award is also for the sisters and i have a few board members here today who i am sure i wouldn't be standing here without their partnerships. so, thank you all very much

and i think education is the great equalizer in our society. and as we talk about gender equality, gender equality in math and science is such a critical area. and i'm really pleased with such great honorees, but i'm focusing on an amazing, amazing teacher who began over 45 years ago at washington high school. and i think there's a lot of ego pride in our neighborhood. she is an amazing toeholder we are honoring for women's history month. her contribution is in the field of mathematics at washington high school, go back over 40 years. and she is always encouraging and challenging girls and young women to study advanced courses and to consider opportunities in majoring in math and science and going on to really apply their learning. but i think she's -- when i review the different comments about her from less experienced teachers and students, the words that come out are nurturing and supportive and just a really person that brings everyone together as well. one of the events that washington high does is the pie day or pi day. i know in the math

while the lecture series is not presented in a university forum our role in educating the public has been greatly successful. i mention this as a way of explaining there are ways to bring architectural history to the public in a gentle way to elevate the discourse and helps the punished understanding in their context. i believe strongly that a built environment defines us and is a picture of who we are to others and as winston churchill said we shape our buildings and thereafter they shape us. i believe that i'm a person who can be a bridge to the public from the formal way of defining architectural history to one that is applied, to help turn the fear of owning an historic resource to one of pride to be refreshing and adding to san francisco history in a way that noger diminishes that history nor diminishes the needs of the public. when i came to san francisco in 1989, the first project i worked on was the renovation of rehabilitation of temple emanuel on lake street, a building by legendary architects that includes the office of babe he will and brown and bernard bay back. i worked

i completed my education where i studied the building soft story ordinance as wells my dissertation. i would like to offer myself as a resource in the implementation planning going forward for this law bass it is a law that i will like to see pass. the current state of soft story building residents an opportunity -- it's not that -- rather that owners even those that have the desires and resources to make-up grades are stuck in a catch 22 with regards to the pressures they are under in the housing mark. without looking to doing an upgrade seriously those that do remain the suckers as a disadvantage to the peers that do not. what management does is take that a way, 25 percent of the land building owners who were notified and required to do an evaluation did a retrofit. doing it now is inevitable. so why should you do exactly what berkeley did? they haven't passed their mandatory second phase retrofit ordinance yet and now they are the suckers again because of failure of government action to follow through. and only government action can signal to tenants that it's worth paying more fo
